🔐 UNDERSTANDING DOOR BACKSET MONTREAL– 2 3/8″ vs 2 3/4″ 🔐
🔐 DO YOU KNOW YOUR DOOR BACKSET? (IMPORTANT DETAIL MOST PEOPLE MISS)
Many clients don’t realize that when installing or replacing a lock, one small detail makes a big difference: the backset.
👉 What is a backset?
The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole where the lock or handle is installed.
📏 THE TWO STANDARD SIZES
✔️ 2 3/8″ (60mm)
• Common on older residential doors
• Found in older homes, condos, and apartments
• Typical on locks installed between 1980–2000
✔️ 2 3/4″ (70mm)
• Standard on most newer doors (2000–today)
• Common on commercial doors
• Used for offices, storefronts, and heavier doors
• Provides better spacing for larger and stronger hardware
⚠️ WHY IT MATTERS
Installing the wrong backset can lead to:
• Misaligned locks (off-center installation)
• Weak security or improper function
• Extra labor and costly door modifications
• Need to push or alter the latch deeper into the door
👉 Many residential locks are adjustable (twist or pull latch),
but not all locks are adjustable—especially commercial-grade hardware.
🏠 RESIDENTIAL vs 🏬 COMMERCIAL
🏠 Residential Doors
• Older doors: usually 2 3/8″
• Newer doors: now standard at 2 3/4″
🏬 Commercial Doors
• Most require 2 3/4″
• Some older doors (pre-2000) may still use 2 3/8″
• If a 2 3/8″ latch is required, it often needs to be special ordered
